The following information is used to perform the work requested in the “steps” and to answer the “missions” in the Cybati Blackbox Challenge #1. Each step requested will be demonstrated with text and screenshots to walk the reader through the necessary steps to fulfill the step and/or mission. All steps assume that the Cybati VM is up and running and the user has logged into the system. This post is blog post 1 of 15.

Step 1:
Instruction: Start the Blackbox. Select the complexity level. The wizard will execute a series of scripts to build a complete IT/ICS/Internet network comprising of almost 40 active nodes. At this time complexity level does not influence point allocation.

MISSION 1 (5 pts.). Identify the host IP address and default gateway

  1. Double click on the “Blackbox Wizard Console” launcher on the desktop
  2. If you haven’t reset the blackbox wizard, double click on “0. Reset” to get to a known good initial state
  3. Double click on the “1. Start the Blackbox (WIZARD)” icon

  7. The user will see an overview of the virtual ICS environment in a map with “Industrial”, “Corporate” and “Internet” network segments. The initialization process will continue to run with various informational boxes showing up which help describe to the user of the background activity that is being performed.
  8. Once the process is complete, you will see a popup box with information such as the IP address and gateway of the host as below. You may see different results for the network adapter in your environment.

  9. As indicated in the popup box above, the answer for Mission 1 is:
IP Address: 172.16.192.50/24 on the b.26.f4 network interface
    Default Gateway: 172.16.192.1
